Structure of Electric Overhead Crane
The structure of ordinary overhead EOT crane consists of bridge metal structure, hoist trolley, crane running mechanism and electrical control system.
The bridge frame is box-shaped structure welded by steel plates, mainly including main beam, end beam, walkway, railings, cabin, etc.
The main beam is divided into two types: single main beam bridge and double main beam bridge. The main beam is welded with rails for the operation of the crane trolley.
The main beam and the end beam are rigidly connected, and both ends of the end beam are equipped with wheels to support the bridge to run on the elevated runway beam.
The hoist trolley is composed of hoisting mechanism, trolley running mechanism and trolley frame:
The lifting mechanism includes motor, brake, reducer, drum and pulley bloock. The motor drives the drum to rotate through the reducer, so that the steel wire rope is wound on the drum to lift or lower the load.
The trolley frame is a welded structure which supports the lifting mechanism and the trolley running mechanism.
The drivinatg mode of the crane running mechanism comes in two types:
- Centralized drive –one electric motor is used to drive the long drive shaft so as to drive the active wheels on both sides.
- Separate drive –the driving wheels on both sides are driven separately by an electric motor.
Generally, the medium and small overhead cranes mostly use the three-in-one driving method that combines brake, reducer and motor. Large overhead cranes often use universal couplings for easy installation and adjustment.
The crane running mechanism often uses four driving wheels and driven wheels. If the lifting weight is large, the wheels are often increased to reduce the wheel pressure. When there are more than four wheels, an articulated balanced frame device must be used to evenly distribute the load of the crane on each wheel.
There are two types of electric conduction for trolley running mechanism and crane running mechanism: sliding line conduction and cable conduction. Cable conduction is divided into patrol type cable conduction and cable drum conduction.
Generally, the electric conduction of the crane running mechanism adopts the safety slide wire, and the trolley mechanism adopts the patrol type cable.
The overhead travelling cranes can be operated in the driver’s cabin, through pendant control or wireless remote control.
The crane and trolley running mechanisms have limit switch to restrict their travel. The lifting mechanism has limit switch to limit its lifting height. When the limit switch cuts off the current, the mechanism stops running. So it can only be operated in the opposite direction.
The overhead crane is also equipped with over-current and zero-position protection devices. In order to prevent people on the bridge from getting an electric shock accident, safety switches are installed on the door leading to the bridge, the railing of the operating room or the hatch cover.

General Safe Operation Requirements For Overhead Crane Drivers
- The relevant personnel should carefully hand over shifts, carefully check the reliability of hooks, wire ropes, brakes, and safety protection devices, and report abnormalities in time.
- Before starting the operation, confirm whether the following conditions are in a safe state:
- Whether all controllers are in the zero position;
- Whether there are irrelevant personnel on the crane and in the work area, and whether the operators are evacuated to safety Area;
- Are there any uncleared obstacles within the crane’s operating range?
- Whether the minimum distance between the crane and other equipment or the buildings is more than 0.5m+;
- Whether the power circuit breaker is locked or has warning signs.
- The operator must ring a bell or warn before driving; when approaching people during operation, the operator should give intermittent bells or warnings.
- The driver shall not perform the following behaviors during normal operation:
- Use the limit position limiter to stop the crane;
- Inspection and maintenance during the lifting operation;
- Adjust the brake of the lifting and luffing mechanism with load, or increase the working range with load;
- The hanging objects must not pass over people’s heads, and people must not stand under hanging objects and the crane.
- Operate strictly in accordance with the command signal, and all emergency stop signals must be implemented immediately.
- When the lifting load is close to or reaches the rated lifting capacity, or when lifting dangerous goods (liquid metal, hazardous materials, flammable and explosive materials), carefully check the brakes before lifting.
- The minimum distance between all parts of the crane, the liftingload, the auxiliary devices and the transmission line should meet the safety requirements.
- The driver should not operate under the following conditions:
- Crane structure or parts such as hooks, wire ropes, brakes, safety protection devices, etc. have defects and damages that affect safe work;
- The hanging object is overloaded or has the possibility of overloading;
- The hanging object is not tightly bound or unstable;
- The work site is dim, and the site, hanging objects or command signals cannot be clearly seen.
- When there is a sudden power failure during work, all controllers should be set to zero position and the main power supply should be turned off.
- If there aremain and auxiliary hoisting mechanisms, it is not allowed to use the main and auxiliary hooks to work at the same time (except for special cranes permitted by the design).
- When two or more cranes are used to lift the same heavy object, each crane must not be overloaded. The steel wire rope should be kept vertical during thelifting and moving process to keep the operation synchronized. When lifting, the relevant responsible technicians and safety technicians should be present for guidance.
